Most "babies" are "little" and most "problems" are "huge": Compositional Entailment in Adjective-Nouns
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examine adjective-noun (AN) composition in the task of recognizing textual entailment (RTE). We analyze behavior of ANs in large corpora and show that, despite conventional wisdom, adjectives do not always restrict the denotation of the nouns they modify. We use natural logic to characterize the variety of entailment relations that can result from AN composition. Predicting these relations depends on context and on common-sense knowledge, making AN composition especially challenging for current RTE systems. We demonstrate the inability of current stateof-the-art systems to handle AN composition in a simplified RTE task which involves the insertion of only a single word.

Entailment above the word level in distributional semantics
We introduce two ways to detect entailment using distributional semantic representations of phrases. Our first experiment shows that the entailment relation between adjective-noun constructions and their head nouns (big cat |= cat), once represented as semantic vector pairs, generalizes to lexical entailment among nouns (dog |= animal). Our second experiment shows that a classifier fed semantic...
متن کاملLearning Adjective Meanings with a Tensor-Based Skip-Gram Model
We present a compositional distributional semantic model which is an implementation of the tensor-based framework of Coecke et al. (2011). It is an extended skipgram model (Mikolov et al., 2013) which we apply to adjective-noun combinations, learning nouns as vectors and adjectives as matrices. We also propose a novel measure of adjective similarity, and show that adjective matrix representatio...
متن کاملAssessing Interpretable, Attribute-related Meaning Representations for Adjective-Noun Phrases in a Similarity Prediction Task
We present a distributional vector space model that incorporates Latent Dirichlet Allocation in order to capture the semantic relation holding between adjectives and nouns along interpretable dimensions of meaning: The meaning of adjective-noun phrases is characterized in terms of ontological attributes that are prominent in their compositional semantics. The model is evaluated in a similarity ...

متن کاملDeveloping a Semantic Similarity Judgment Test for Persian Action Verbs and Non-action Nouns in Patients With Brain Injury and Determining its Content Validity
Objective: Brain trauma evidences suggest that the two grammatical categories of noun and verb are processed in different regions of the brain due to differences in the complexity of grammatical and semantic information processing. Studies have shown that the verbs belonging to different semantic categories lead to neural activity in different areas of the brain, and action verb processing is r...
